SUFFS The Musical - Recorded from Broadway
About this event

Created by Tony Award winner Shaina Taub, this musical recorded from Broadway tells the story of the American suffragist movement and the remarkable friendships, heartbreak, and action that brought women together— or, in some cases, tore them apart. The ensemble cast features Taub as Alice Paul, Tony winner Nikki M. James as Ida B. Wells, Tony nominee Jenn Colella as Carrie Chapman Catt, and Grace McLean as President Woodrow Wilson.

Beginning at 1:00, you will find displays, artifacts, and ephemera in the theater lobby. Promptly at 1:30, two speakers will introduce“ Suffs, the Musical” and anchor it women’s story of today, followed by film” at 2:00 pm. When the program ends, by 4:45, we expect you will march out of the theater humming the songs from “Suffs”.
Free and open to the public, but Registration is Recommended so we have enough seats.

Our introductory speakers:
Ashley Hopkins-Benton will briefly outline the context of “Suffs, the Musical” in the arc of women’s suffrage history from the 19th century until today. Ashley Is a senior historian and curator of social history at the New York State Museum, and former museum educator with the Columbia County Historical Society. She is the co-author, with Jennifer Lemak, of "Votes for Women: Celebrating New York's Suffrage Centennial." She earned a BA in art education and art studio from SUNY Potsdam and an MA in history museum studies from Cooperstown’s Graduate Program.
Dr. Lauren Kozakiewicz, a Lecturer at the University at Albany Department of History, will present a short overview of the post-suffrage political landscape for women. Suffrage in the 1920’s was “Act I,” followed by Act II - today’s world with women as political candidates, politicians and political actors. Her research focuses on women politicians and political culture in 19th and 20th century America, with special attention to New York State politics. She has published in numerous journals and authoured the book Ladies Day at the Capitol: New York's Women Legislators 1919-1992, the first book to look at New York's women politicians as a distinct group. Dr. Kozakiewicz previously served as history liaison for Albany's University in the High School Program, a statewide collaboration with selected high schools to develop advanced history offerings for university credit.
