Deeds, Not Words: Suffragist Alice Paul

About this event

Join speaker Patricia Nugent for this timely presentation that looks into the history of the suffragist movement and asks what we can learn from their resilience and determination to achieve justice and inclusion.

“Deeds, Not Words”: Militant suffragists, under Alice Paul’s leadership, finally took women’s suffrage over the finish line in 1920 after a 75-year battle. Everything was stacked against them – but their determination was underestimated. How might their strategies inform the challenges we now face during yet another oppressive time in our nation’s history? What can we learn from their resilience and determination to achieve justice and inclusion?

Patricia Nugent's Biography
Following a career as a retired school administrator and adjunct communication professor, Patricia Nugent writes to give voice to those who might otherwise be silenced. She has been a student of the women’s suffrage movement for many decades, feeling a deep personal connection to those who opened up opportunities for her and other women. She's the author of the play “The Stone that Started the Ripple” about a modern-day reunion of the founding suffragists, and editor of the book “Before They Were Our Mothers: Voices of Women Born Before Rosie Started Riveting.”

Nugent is a past president of the Saratoga County LWV and chaired the Women's Rights Awareness Campaign, which helped secure the NYS ERA.An unabashed feminist, her mission to secure the suffragists’ rightful place in American history compels her to write and present about the task left unfinished: Ensuring equality of rights under the law for women.
